Cincinnati context
Cincinnati's famous 'seven hills' terrain shaped the city's growth as directly as its river: steep grades pushed early development into hillside neighborhoods that were, for decades, connected to downtown by a network of inclines built to haul people and goods up slopes too steep for horses and streetcars alone. That same hillside geography still shapes exterior and drainage work across much of the Cincinnati metro today, and the German immigrant housing boom that filled in Over-the-Rhine and many surrounding neighborhoods in the second half of the nineteenth century left the region with a large, aging stock of masonry and closely built homes.
